106. Urusei Yatsura: From Classic to Reboot

In recent years there has been a surge in rebooting older classic anime. Whether it's a full-on proper re-adaptation like Fruits Basket, or a newly reimagined version like Devilman Crybaby. We as fans of these series get a chance to re-live the magic over again while opening a new audience's eye to the beauty of older works and Urusei Yatsura might be the icing on the cake (well... if they could get Berserk right that would probably be the icing on the cake, but Urusei Yatsura would be the ice cream served with it.)
For new fans Urusei Yatsura is a gag manga written by Rumiko Takahashi, famous for Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha, that follows a horny lecherous teen as he has to save the world from an invading cute alien girl that prances around in tiger stripe bikini, only for that "alien" to interfere with his love life and prevent him from ever experiencing true love.. or just fondling any of the girls in the show.
For older fans, we know how much influence this work had on anime as we know it today. Lum Invader was the first "waifu" that people had actual feelings for.. so many feelings that they would write into anime magazines with their distaste with fan art of Lum in lewder riskier themes. She was the first character we saw with this "moe" idea, keeping her pure and innocent, never letting the gags go too far.
With the pedigree of UY and the major influences it has on the medium — as well as pretty much every other Takahashi work, we were super excited to see this long-lost, iconic series get a revamp and hopefully bring this series some attention it deserves. - - Review starts at 25:00
